Being in Puerto Rico during Christmas season is an experience on its own. After all, we’re known for having the longest Christmas in the world. And just when many places are returning to routine, we’re only getting started.
By the third week of January, Old San Juan fills up with people from everywhere — locals and visitors alike — all coming together for one of the island’s most iconic celebrations: Las Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián, better known as Las SanSe. And this year, you get to experience it right from the center of it all.
Work by Day, Celebrate by Night
Piloto 151 Old San Juan sits at the very center of the San Sebastián Street Festival: on San Francisco Street, next to City Hall and located in the square of Plaza de Armas.
What does that look like in real life? You can get your work done during the day in a comfortable, air-conditioned space, and once you log off, step straight into the celebration. Live music everywhere, traditional food, local artisans, cultural performances, and that unmistakable Old San Juan energy, all happening just outside our doors.
Sounds like the perfect plan, right?
To help you make the most of your visit, we’ve put together a practical guide so you can enjoy SanSe comfortably, responsibly, and stress-free.
Shall we get started?
A Bit of History: Why SanSe Exists
Las Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián began in the 1950s as a small, community-led celebration honoring Saint Sebastian, the patron saint of Old San Juan. What started as a neighborhood tradition slowly grew into what is now the largest cultural festival on the island.
Today, SanSe is a full expression of Puerto Rican identity: four days of music, art, folklore, food, and community pride filling the streets of Old San Juan.
How to Get Around and Catch the Action
Las SanSe is huge. Something’s happening around every corner of Old San Juan. To make sure you see it all without losing your mind, here’s the rundown:
Getting Around
Walking is often the easiest (and most fun) way to explore — the streets of Old San Juan are full of charm, and you’ll get to soak it all in. If you’re coming from farther away, the Municipality of San Juan usually offers:
- Shuttle routes from designated areas (usually starting at the back of the Capitol Building)
- Taxis and Uber services from nearby seaports, Escambrón Beach, and Puerta de Tierra
- Traffic restrictions to keep the festival streets safe, including for residents
- Extra public transportation during peak hours — ferries, metro, buses, you name it
Pro tip: Avoid driving directly into Old San Juan during festival hours. Let your feet do the work — it’s easier, faster, and way less stressful.
Catching the Music, Art & Events
With so much going on, planning ahead helps. Live performances, artisan booths, parades, and cultural activities are happening all over the city — there’s something for every preference.
Best Days to Visit:
- Thursday & Friday: Chill vibes, more art and culture, easier to walk around, and perfect for discovering artisans and traditional performances. Although honestly? In recent years, the festival has shown us that no matter the day, everyone’s ready to party from the start! So don’t be surprised if the streets are busier than expected.
- Saturday & Sunday: Full party mode! Bigger crowds, louder music, and high-energy vibes all day and night.
What You Can’t Miss
- The Big Heads (Cabezudos) parades: every day at 5:30 pm on San Sebastián Street, featuring comparsas, pleneros, and cultural groups
- Traditional Puerto Rican street food
- Local artisan booths: check out Plaza Arturo Somohano, Beneficencia, Salvador Brau, Jardín de Ballajá, and El Paseo de la Princesa
- Live music: bomba, plena, salsa, and folk performances throughout the streets
- If You’re Bringing Kids: Plaza Salvador Brau comes alive with family-friendly fun all weekend starting at 9 am with educational workshops, face painting, free snacks, and tailored shows
Main Squares & Where Everything Happens
- Plaza de Armas
- Plaza Colón
- Plaza del Quinto Centenario
- Plaza de la Barandilla
- Plaza San José
Each plaza has its own mix of music, food, and cultural programming. Plan to hop between them if you can!
Festival Hours
Activities usually start around 5:00 pm on Thursday and Friday, and midday on Saturday and Sunday, going well into the early morning, especially over the weekend. Pace yourself, hydrate often, and listen to your body. Don’t wait until you’re exhausted to leave; plan to wrap up while you’re still in a good mood, since exiting the festival can take some time.
What to Wear: Comfort Is Key
Las SanSe is basically a marathon disguised as a party. Lots of walking, dancing, standing, and squeezing through crowds. Dressing smart will save your feet, your energy, and your mood.
Clothing & Accessories
- Comfortable shoes (non-negotiable — Old San Juan’s cobblestones will humble you)
- Breathable clothing for warm days and packed streets
- Light rain jacket or poncho — January likes to keep us guessing
- Fanny pack or crossbody bag (hands-free = stress-free)
- Essentials You’ll Be Glad You Brought
- ID
- Cash and one card (some vendors are old-school, and that’s part of the charm)
- Reusable water bottle — hydration is key
- Light snacks for when lines get long
- Portable phone charger (maps, photos, social media — it adds up)
- Pocket fan (you’ll thank us later)
- Camera or phone to capture all the moments
